A Dedicated Server Guide For Noobs

July 28th, 2010

A lot of people wonder just what a dedicated server is. In all honesty, a dedicated server isn’t that complicated a product. In simple terms, a dedicated server is a normal computer that’s hosted in a secure datacentre with a fast internet connection. The large majority of server hosting providers are experts in this. Having the correct setup and environment is important for dedicated server hosting. Let’s go over those descriptions for a dedicated server.

A server is just like a computer

A computer is housed in a big case, which can be homed on a desk. Dedicated servers have specialised cases. Approximately 3″, 1U is a special measurement used in datacentre environments. These servers are specially made in cases that fit in racks. Apart from allowing efficient air flow and cooling, racks allow for efficient cable management. Probably the best known server manufacturer would be Dell. Dell you will know sell laptops and home computers to individuals. So actually, the main difference between home computer and dedicated server, is the case they are housed in. Granted dedicated servers are usually a lot more high powered and resilient.

Dedicated servers are hosted in datacentres

The most common hosting servers will be in a 1U box. If you think of a pizza box, the height is about the same as 1U! And of course a dedicated server contains high powered server components, and not yummy pizza! An example of this would be Dell’s R200 rackmount server. 26 servers can be fitted into a 16 amp rack on averaged, based on a power draw of 0.6 – 0.4 amps. These servers fit in racks via rackmount rails, so they appear to be stacked on top of each other. At the back of the dedicated server is a power port, and a network port. Each rack will have at least one switch, and a power supply, which the dedicated servers will individually and neatly hook up to. Datacentre racks are arranged into aisels. Rows of racks in aisels can be seen in datacentres. Some racks will host switches and routers for connectivity. For this sort of setup, a company such as Melbourne who specialise in server hosting would be ideal.

Dedicated servers require a fast internet connection

Your home connection (at the time of writing) will probably be around 10mbps if you are lucky, in some cases higher. For the majority of dedicated servers, this isn’t sufficient. A 100mbit connection is expected for dedicated servers. Website such as video sites require this high connection. Server hosting, all in all requires the proper server setup, a cool datacentre and high speed internet connection.
