How To Register A Web Domain Name

August 5th, 2009

Registering your first web domain name isn’t as complicated as some might think. All it takes is remembering a few steps. Here they are in a nutshell:

  • Step 1- Choosing Your Web Domain Name

Before you purchase your new web domain name, you must first decide on a name. Now don’t stick to just one name because chances are that it will be taken(This is especially true if it’s a .com domain you want.) So make a list of atleast 5-8 different names you would like for your domain and write them down. Keep in mind that you may use dashes to see more availability.

  • Step 2 – Purchasing Your Domain

Once you’ve chosen your domain it’s time to pull out the credit card and find a suitable registrar. Here’s a list of the most widely known domain registrars:

World’s Largest Registrar – GoDaddy.com  — This extremely popular registrar (possibly the biggest today) offers .com domain names for $9.99 (plus 20 cents) per year ($6.99 plus 20 cents if you transfer from another registrar). These are all the different extensions they offer .com, .us, .biz, .info, .net, .org, .ws, .name, .tv, .co.uk, .me.uk and .org.uk. Note that (as with all registrars) the exact price varies depending on which domain you are registering (for example some domain extensions are more expensive than others). Both credit card and PayPal payments are accepted.

Dotster.com  — This fairly popular registrar provides fairly cheap domain prices ($15.75 plus 20 cents per domain), a convenient web interface to manage your domains, an optional privacy facility where your domain name is registered in the name of a proxy company, etc. They offer .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, .us, .ca, .tv, .name, .cc, .de, .sr, .md, .co.uk, .us.com domains, etc. If you’re transferring a domain here from other registrars, the price is even cheaper ($6.99 plus 20 cents). Both credit card and PayPal payments are accepted here.

Register.com  — This domain name registrar has been in business for a very long time: they were one of the biggest around when I started my first websites. They are currently running an offer (only via the above link) where they charge $9.99 per year for a domain name with a free business email account. Although the offer will expire eventually, you can apparently continue to use the $9.99 price for the life of the domain as long as you stay with them. Domains qualifying for this offer include .com, .net, .org, .biz, .us and .info. Country-specific domains have different prices. Note: the special offer link is rather flaky. If you don’t get the $9.99 offer the first time you click it, but instead get their normal $35 price, return to this page again (for example, by clicking the Back button on your browser), and click the link again. The $9.99 offer should appear the second time you click it (or at least it did for me). [I've no idea why it works that way; I don't run their site.]

Global Domains International  — This is primarily a registrar for the .ws extension, but they also offer every other extension. They have been around since 1999 and are becoming more and more popular. What seperates them from all other domain registrars is that they offer a FREE .ws domain with free hosting for 7 days. After the 7-day trial expires, if you like the hosting then they only charge you $10 a month. If you decide to register any other extension then you have to pay $10 without the free trial. The registration includes a complete  webstart package wth free hosting options, 10 custom email accounts, website builder, hundreds of templates you can use, email forwarding, url forwarding, and technical support. Both credit card and PayPal payments are accepted by this registrar.

Once you’ve registered your domain, you have to remember to renew your lease at the end of the year or whenever it’s set to expire. What you don’t want to do is lose your domain because of lack of payment. Once you do all the changes you made to your site will be lost.

If you want to prevent this from happening, make sure to keep an eye on your domain at all times, or simply get a free .ws domain from Global Domains International. Your free web domain will only be available to you even if you forget to pay on time. So there’s no need to stress about ever losing your site due to a simple mistake.
