What you may not know is that your web space also includes your website log files, FrontPage extensions, PHP files, CGI programs, externally linked CSS and Javascript files, and usually email accounts and emails as well as space for any databases.
Briefly, here’s how your web space is used up:
Log files – a list of all requests made to your hosting company’s website server by your website. Your log files tell where visitors are coming from, how often they return, and how they navigate through your site.
FrontPage extensions – FrontPage is website creation software from Microsoft that allows you to build and maintain web pages via a graphic interface. FrontPage extensions are script files that run on the web server to extend the functionality of FrontPage when your website is viewed. Externally linked CSS files – CSS, short for Cascading Style Sheets, is an addition to HTML that gives website developers more control over how pages are displayed. With CSS, designers can create style sheets that define how different elements, such as headers and links, appear. If CSS definitions are shared among pages in a website, they are usually stored on the web hosting server as a file that is then “linked” by the web pages that require them.
Javascript files – a type of computer code used to perform tasks on Web pages, such as incrementing a “number of visitors” counter or checking the input fields on a form for errors. Bottom line: If you are hosting one relatively simple website, you probably won’t need more than 50 mb of disk storage. However, if you’re planning on hosting a large website or multiple websites on a single hosting plan, then you should look for a plan with several hundred gigabytes of storage capacity.
You can estimate your web space needs by locating your website files on your hard drive and getting a total of the space used. This is easily done in Windows Explorer by selecting the folder or folders that contain your entire website and right-clicking. Select Properties and refer to the “Size:” display. You will get a total of the space used by all the files in the folder(s). Don’t forget to add estimated space for emails and databases.
Finally, total the space for all the websites you expect to host on a single hosting account, add at least half of that space back again for growth and you should have a fairly accurate estimate of the space you will need for your websites now and in the future.

Recently, I was using WordTracker.com to find out which “real estate website” phrases get searched most often through Google, Yahoo and similar search engines. It surprised me that the phrase “real estate web hosting” and the longer “real estate web site hosting” were two of the most commonly searched phrases.
Now this might one of three things. It could mean that (A) real estate web hosting companies are checking their own search engine rankings so often that it has inflated the search volume of that phrase, (B) real estate agents are genuinely searching for real estate web hosting on a frequent basis, or (C) a combination of the two.
Whatever the reason for it, the data prompted me to write this article on the subject to educate real estate agents about web hosting.

You can get reliable web hosting (backed up by good customer service) for less than $10 per month. As a long-time customer, I only pay about $6 per month for the hosting of my real estate websites.
Some hosting companies label themselves as “real estate web hosting experts.” But this doesn’t make much sense. Hosting a real estate website is no different than hosting any other website. All a hosting company does is host your files on a server (a big computer) somewhere, thus allowing your website files to be called up whenever somebody’s web browser requests them. So from a technical standpoint, there is nothing unique about hosting a real estate website as compared to, say, a website about basket weaving. Files are files, and data is data.
Here’s the bottom line I want you to remember. If you are paying more than $10 per month for hosting because a company claims to specialize in real estate web site hosting, you are probably paying too much.
Real Estate Web Development – A Different Story
Now, website development is another thing entirely. Some companies legitimately specialize in real estate website development. Perhaps they’re intimately familiar with implementing IDX, MLS and similar real-estate-specific data tools. Or maybe they have built-in contact-management tools that allow you to upload listing information and property photos.
So on the design and development side of things, there is often a legitimate need for a real estate web design specialist. But again, they should not charge you a lot for hosting, and if they do you’re being had.
Some web development companies will tell you that they need to host your real estate website on their servers because your website requires special features. This too is bogus. A legitimate web development firm will let you host your real estate website anywhere you want … they won’t trap you into their overpriced hosting plan, or claim to be “real estate web hosting” specialists.

In these cases you’d want more than the average storage.
Bandwidth per month (as expressed in Gigabytes) is a limit on how much data your website can transfer each month. For small websites, you don’t need to worry too much. But as you get more visitors that download pictures, ebooks, software, or other files, the amount of bandwidth you need will increase sharply. And you will be charged a premium amount for any bandwidth over what your original contract allowed. So it’s good to get more bandwidth than less if the price isn’t much more.
What about MySQL Databases?
MySQL is a program that comes on most servers that allows you to run any program that requires a database to operate. An example would be if you wanted to have a bunch of high-resolution photographs being uploaded and downloaded on a regular basis through a program (many are available – most free – that will do this), or any data-intensive program like this. You will normally only need one MySQL database, so don’t pay more to get extra. It’s worth noting that your host may offer some other kind of SQL instead of MySQL (for example, PostgreSQL). You should usually avoid anything other than MySQL, because MySQL has become the industry standard; all programs work flawlessly with it.
What about things like PHP, Perl, ASP, JSP, or ColdFusion?
These are all scripting languages, used to write your website. No need to know how they work, but you should make sure your host offers whichever ones that any software you plan to use requires. If you don’t have specific requirements, then you should be fine with just Perl and PHP – these are the standard ones that come pre-installed on any server using cPanel. No need to fret over the technical details like these. Just get cPanel hosting to make your easy web hosting goals a reality!
How About Subdomains?
Subdomains allow you to split your website into more sections than just “http://www(dot)yoursite(dot)com.” For example, if you wanted people to be able to go to ‘shop(dot)yourdomain(dot)com’ and ‘news(dot)yourdomain(dot)com.’ You don’t really need these, though, as doing the same thing with subfolders is usually just as effective. What are subfolders? Any extension after a forward slash– “/” following your main domain name. In the following URL, www(dot)yoursite(dot)com/subdomain-folder, “subdomain-folder” is a subdomain folder! (Of course, you can name it whatever you want.)
FTP accounts:
A FTP (File Transfer Protocol) account is what you’ll use to upload your website to your host. You’ll always get one of these built into your webhost’s control panel, so don’t be concerned about that. It’s just a native program designed to transfer your website files and graphics from your home computer to your web host’s web server. You’ll also eventually want to get your own ftp software to load on your computer to upload & download files, images, and whatever else to and from your website/webhost. But the one that comes with your hosting will work for now.
POP3 accounts:
POP stands for ‘Post Office Protocol’, which is just fancy-speak for “email.” The more POP3 accounts you get, the more email addresses you can have. For example, if you want to have several email addresses such as sales(at)yourdomain(dot)com and support(at)yourdomain(dot)com and yourname(at)yourdomain(dot)com, etc.
So your easy web hosting solution should include the standard cPanel interface. (A fancy way of saying “control panel” for uploading, downloading, and manipulating images, files, webpages, etc. on your web host’s server.)
